Golden turmeric pineapple smoothie with ginger, lime and fresh turmeric root

Fresh turmeric and ginger give pineapple a warm, peppery counterpoint. This colorful smoothie is inspired by Jamaican ginger-and-turmeric flavor combinations, with coconut water keeping the blend light.

Ingredients

  • 1½ cups frozen pineapple chunks
  • 1 cup coconut water
  • 1 inch fresh turmeric root, peeled and chopped
  • 1 inch fresh ginger root, peeled and chopped
  • Juice of ½ lime
  • ½ frozen banana
  • 1 pinch black pepper, optional
  • ½ cup ice

Method

  1. 1. Add the pineapple, coconut water, turmeric, ginger, lime juice, banana and optional black pepper to a blender.
  2. 2. Blend on high until smooth, then add the ice and blend again until cold.
  3. 3. Pour into glasses and rinse the blender promptly; fresh turmeric can stain surfaces.

Good to know

Fresh turmeric stains cutting boards and fabric. Use a washable board and rinse the blender immediately after serving.

Cultural context

Jamaica / Ginger, turmeric and tropical fruit

Ginger, turmeric and tropical fruit are familiar flavors in Jamaican cooking and drinks. This smoothie is a contemporary, fruit-forward interpretation rather than a claim about one traditional Jamaican preparation.

Traditional use: Ginger and turmeric are used as culinary roots in drinks, seasonings and foods across Jamaica and the Caribbean, with recipes varying by family and region.

What research suggests: Turmeric and ginger contain studied plant compounds, but kitchen quantities are not a substitute for medical care or a prescribed treatment.

Safety note: Turmeric and ginger can bother some stomachs and may interact with medicines, including some that affect bleeding. Ask a clinician if you take medication or have a health condition.

Questions, answered.

Can I use ground turmeric?

Yes. Begin with ½ teaspoon and adjust to taste. Fresh turmeric is more peppery and vivid.

Why add black pepper?

It adds a small savory note and is a common pairing with turmeric, but it is entirely optional for flavor.
