Green matcha pear smoothie with pear slices and a bamboo whisk

This soft green smoothie pairs matcha’s grassy depth with ripe pear, spinach and a little ginger. It borrows a flavor palette rather than presenting itself as a traditional Japanese drink.

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe pear, cored and chopped
  • 1 packed cup baby spinach
  • 1 cup unsweetened oat milk
  • 1 teaspoon culinary matcha
  • ½ frozen banana
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 teaspoon lime juice
  • 4 ice cubes

Method

  1. 1. Whisk the matcha with two tablespoons of oat milk in a small cup until smooth.
  2. 2. Add the pear, spinach, remaining oat milk, banana, ginger, lime juice and matcha mixture to a blender.
  3. 3. Blend until velvety, add the ice and blend once more.

Good to know

Whisking matcha with a small amount of liquid first prevents dry green pockets in the finished smoothie.

Cultural context

Japan / Matcha

Matcha is closely connected to Japanese tea culture, while this blended pear drink is a contemporary use of the powder. The recipe keeps the matcha accent gentle and treats the ingredient as food, not a promise.

Traditional use: Finely ground tea has been whisked and served in Japanese tea traditions for centuries, with distinct ceremonial and everyday contexts.

What research suggests: Green tea contains caffeine and catechins, but the amount varies with the powder and serving; research findings should not be read as medical advice.

Safety note: Matcha contains caffeine. Use less or choose another smoothie if you are sensitive to caffeine, and check with a clinician if you have a reason to limit it.

Questions, answered.

Which matcha should I use?

A culinary-grade matcha works well in a smoothie and is usually more affordable than ceremonial grades.

Can I make this without spinach?

Yes. The pear and matcha still carry the flavor; add a few extra ice cubes for volume.
